How to defeat procrastination. (writing edition)

Hey everyone! It’s the monthly writer's edition! Now, I have the worst trouble with procrastination. I always find myself saying, “I'll do it later. Just a minute. I promise, just a second. It can wait.” If you find yourself saying something like this frequently, then that is procrastination. Today I'm going to talk about how to beat procrastination and get the things you need to get done actually done.

I’m a writer, not just for blogs, but also fiction. I find myself putting off writing that next chapter all the time. I know how it's going to go, but sometimes I'd rather watch a movie, read a book, or stay on social media rather than focus on writing. It's a bad habit. And it’s one I'm going to help you break.

Let's start by seeing how we can make ourselves do the things we don't want to do. Whether it’s writing that last chapter, getting a sentence in, or just sitting down to write. Discipline. We must have discipline in our life. But the people around us aren't going to do it. So we must.

Hebrews 12:11 says, “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (ESV)

We must train ourselves to have that discipline that yields the peaceful fruit. Like it says, all discipline seems painful. But it pays off.

If you're a writer wouldn't it be great to hold a copy of your own book? And say, “I wrote this. Edited, published, and now all of my hard work is paying off!”

And not just with writing, with everything. Like not spending time on your phone when you could be getting homework done. In anything and everything we do in life, we will have to have discipline., because the only way we will get anything done is, of course, if we actually do it.

John 9:4 says,“We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.” (ESV)

So here is what I hope you will take from what I've said

  • It may feel time-consuming. Or something you could put off. But it yields fruit

- We must train ourselves to have discipline.

- Don't put things off. Get it done.
